Water is in a state of dynamic equilibrium in which H2O molecules dissociate into
H3O+ (hydronium) and OH- (hydroxide)
ions at the same rate at which they are being reformed.
For simplicity, H3O+ can be viewed as H2O plus a H+ (hydrogen ion), or
proton.
