Research at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in New Hampshire monitored
nitrate runoff by measuring stream water collected at dams.
The control (unlogged) plots experienced little loss of minerals; most of the nitrates cycled within the system.
The deforested plots showed 60 times greater loss of nitrates.
