Centuries of developing and channeling for navigation have straightened the once-meandering Rhine River and disconnected it from its floodplain and associated wetlands.

France, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Switzerland are cooperating to reconnect the river to side channels, which increase the diversity of habitats available to aquatic biota, improve water quality, and provide flood protection.
