Plant Structure: Leaves, Stems, and Roots - Key

PART A - LEAVES P. 21; Figure 2-5
  1. P. 25 Bean plant. What organelle would you expect to be abundante in the parenchyma of the leaf?
    Chloroplasts.
What gas is a necessary reactant of photosynthesis?
    CO2
What gas is a product of photosynthesis?
    O2
  2. Tradescantia slide: are the stomata open or closed?
    varies
PART B - STEMS P. 27; Figure 6-9 P. 34
  1. P. 29 Zea stem. Is this the stem of a monocot or dicot plant?
    Monocot.
    What is transpoted in xylem?
    Water and minerals. In phloem?
    Sugar and organic compounds.
  2. Ranunculus herbaceous stem. Is this the stem of a monocot or dicot plant?
    Dicot.
  3. Woody Dicot: Tilia. What is the age of the stem you are examining in your microscope?
    Varies.
Of what kind of cells is the pith composed?
    Ground tissue (parenchyma).
PART C - ROOTS P. 33; Figure 10 P. 34
  1. Ranunculus root. The vascular tissue of the root is concentrated in aingle vascular bundle (stele) in the center of the root. How does this compare with the number of vascular bundles in the stem?
Stem has several vascular bundles forming a ring. Figure 8 p. 31.
Xylem is found toward the center of the vascular bundle and phloem toward the outside of the stele. How does this compare to their arrangement in the stem?
Xylem and phloem are separated by a layer of vascular cambium (not surrounded by a layer of endodermis). Figure 8 p. 31.
  2. P. 35 Allium root tip. How is the meristematic region protected in the stem tip? Figure 6 p. 28
    By terminal bud.
In which of these regions would you expect to find the specialized cells of vascular tissue?
    Region of maturation. Figure 11 p. 36
In which of these regions are the cells genetically identical? Why?
All of them are products of mitosis.
Exercise P. 37:
  1. This is a cross section of what organ?
    monocot stem
  2. This is a cross section of what organ?
    dicot root
  3. This is a cross section of what organ?
    leaf
  4. This is a cross section of what organ?
    herbaceous dicot stem
  5. This is a cross section of what organ?
    woody (dicot) stem
  6. Label: terminal bud, node, internode, leaf, axil, axillary bud, blade, midrib, vein, and petiole.
